Help! Mexican Red Head Amazon? 10 points please answer soon!?
Hi, i am getting a red head amazon! Instead of a sun conure. SOrry for saying i was getting sun conure, we changed our mind to a female red headed amazon parrot. I might get a male, i am not sure. I have a few questions. Should i put the bird in living room or my room? My room is quieter, but we live kinda near a street, and we have our dog in the living room. The cage will be with a stand. Please tell me what the cage requirements are for a single red head amazon? And PLEASE tell me the bar spacing requirement, and the cage measurement requirements for one. Thanks so much in advance! And is 3-6 hours out of cage play time good enough? What size toys should i get? Small, medium, or large? Thanks so much in advance! How many times should i give my bird a bath? Once a day? Once a week? And how many times should i clean the cage? Once a day? Once a week what? Again, thanks in advance!
The bird would prefer being where people spend their time (in our case, that would be the family room and not the living room), But it will need to sleep – are you willing to shut your living room down at 8 or 9pm? Or you could have a sleep cage for it somewhere else (which is what we do).
A basic 2′ cube should be adequate; larger would be even better. Get one with a flat top, which is a convenient play area. Most bird cages that size will have a bar spacing of 3/4 inch to one inch, which is just fine. You could probably go up to 1.25 inches; or down to 1/2 inch.
Three to six hours out-of-cage play time is fine, but where is this going to happen? Are you counting on the bird and dog getting along?
As for toys, it will be up to your bird. Some of our redhead’s favorite toys are empty soda cans (they make a lovely noise when dropped off the cage), corn on the cob (he’ll eat much of it if fresh. If dried, he mostly just drops kernels to make noise, plus occasionally dropping the whole thing off the cage), small cardboard boxes or paper towel rolls (they shred), and soft wooden toys (they also shred). Soft baby teething toys are also fun to shred. But that’s our bird. Yours will have its own preferences.
Our parrots take showers with us. They always get to sit on the shower door and get steamed; occasionally we get them soggy, too. Our red-lored would happily get soggy every day (she’s a hedonist – it feels good), while our redhead only wants one about once a week (he’s a pragmatist. He doesn’t want a shower until he feels dirty). (same with blow-drying. She’d sit under the blow-dryer all day – it’s her personal parrot sauna. He holds his wings out to get dried. Once he’s dry, he loses interest. Though he still likes the noise.)
We give our cages a major cleaning once a week (since each bird has two, the cages only get dirty half as fast), but how often you need to clean will depend partly on the cage design. We pick up toys several times a day, clean their water whenever needed (avg. 3 times a day), and sweep up around the cages as needed (every day or two). Our birds also spend a lot of time on the couch with us. The top of the couch is covered with towels, which we change every few days.
Compared to the yellow-headed amazons, Mexican redheads are pretty mellow but don’t talk as well. Ours wants to be with us all the time, is very sweet, but not cuddly – he likes to stand on you (shoulder, arms, knees when you’re sitting), but not being held.
