Well one thing I can say is that I’ve traveled all over the world and for the most part Dominicans are among the content people in the world.

The music is very romantic and dancing is big part of their social life. There are two main dance styles, the Merengue and the Bachata. The Merengue is fast and more urban usually with lots of horns and big bands and silly lyrics, and the Merengue is guitar based and are love songs where the guy never ends up with the girl. They are very good guitar players!

Their diet is pretty basic and a typical dinner would be chicken cooked in a pot with rice and then yucca or plantains on the side. Dominicans make the best rice in the world. One thing that I find funny is Dominicans eat a lot of spaghetti. Papaya milkshakes are wonderful things.

The country lived under a horrible dictator for 30 years until about 1961 when the CIA helped to have him assassinated. The economy was mostly exporting sugar until about 20 years ago and now tourism and exporting clothes are a big part of their economy

Most people get around by paying someone to take them on the back of a motorbike, called a motoconcho. What is amazing is they can carry pretty much anything on a motoconcho. You will see someone moving a washing machine or two people with one guy carrying a sheet of plywood. I’ve also seen someone dragging a bundle of thin rebar behind them causing a lot of sparks.

Chicken fights are popular for some people and usually happen on Sundays. People will bet a lot of money on the fights.

Dominos is a popular game and you can often hear them play because they slam the dominos down hard. They mostly play for fun and don’t gamble on it. The best way to go out is when your last domino can match on either end of the chain. This is called a capicua and you get more points for that.

Here is a typical Bachata song with some good dancing. The singer says las night I dreamt of being with her and that we made passionate love. But it was only a dream because she never has the time to be with me for even a moment.
