Can I put plastic or glass over a tiled counter top that I wish to protect?
I may be inheriting my parent’s house soon. They have beautiful Mexican Tile on the kitchen countertops, but it’s a ***** to keep the grout clean. I’m wondering if it would be possible to lay some kind of thick clear, easy-to-clean material over the countertops, so that the tile would be visible but protected. What would be best for this purpose? I’m worried glass would crack if I put a heavy ceramic bowl down on it too hard, but I don’t know what sort of plastic would have the clarity I’m looking for. Also, what would the best way to keep the sheets in place? Building them into frames, then laying the frames over the tile? Or using some kind of adhesive patches around four corners?
Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
Glass countertops are available but the price of $200-$300 per square foot makes it cost prohibitive for most folks. You might contact your local glass company and ask for pricing on tempered glass pieces that could be installed over your tiles, perhaps in the areas most in use or most likely to need cleaning. We have a local Mexican restaurant that has glass over tiles on their tables. The table edges have a raised wood border so the glass rests on the wood edging and is not directly on the tiles to avoid scratching the tile.
Grout sealants are available to protect the grout and make clean-up an easy task, which might be the lower cost and better solution.
Clear Plastic sheets could be installed, however the plastic easily scratches and it would likely detract from the beauty of the tile..
