Is a Wink a sign of disrespect in Mexican Culture?
My friend and I were talking to a Mexican Gentlemen, who we could tell, did not take too kindly to us. Anyway, long story short, some harsh words were exchanged and he walked away. While leaving, he turned around and winked at us. We were confused, then a bystander told us it was a sign of disrespect in Mexican culture. Several other bystanders confirmed this. I looked it up online but can find no definitive answer. So, was he disrespecting me or not?
I wink when I’m joking, trying to make someone understand that I don’t really mean what I’m saying (like complicity) or to flirt, but I don’t think it was a sign of disrespect. I thought winking was the same everywhere.
