Does today’s modern consumer-culture seem nihilistic to you?
What with the Swedish furniture and unauthentic Mexican-food, I can’t help thinking of the meaninglessness of it all. If it is so, then who is to blame; the consumer base for being zombie-like sheeple, or the capitalist elitists for being superficial pimps?
tomauty: by nihilism I mean, doesn’t it seem that consumer-culture lacks depth, reasoning and meaning. I’m not trying to sound deep or meaningful in contrast to it, I’m just wondering if anyone else feels the same way. Most feel alienated with being individualistic, while I feel alienated with being like everyone else. At what point do people just realize that meaning and worth are not arbitrated by the status quo, by numbers and statistics and certainly not dollars and cents? How can an individual construe his own values if everything he’s ever seen has a price label?
A fancy material lifestyle is the norm these days. Everyone wants the latest cellphone model. Everyone wants a plasma tv for who-knows-what-reason.
Its like keeping up with the Jones. Nobody wants to fall behind.
