International Flamenco Festival in Jerez
There is one word that comes close to distilling the passion, boldness and energy of Spanish Culture. That word is flamenco. At once it conjures up the wild romance of the gitano (gypsy), and the single-minded expression that comes from a fusion of music, dance and voice. For flamenco-lovers, Andalucia is the home of flamenco and Jerez de la Frontera is its beating heart. So if you want to come close to the heart of flamenco, then the International Flamenco Festival this spring demands your presence. Book now your accommodation Andalucia to spend your holiday in Spain and discover the Flamenco tradition.
This flamenco event has been held here, in the city of Jerez, for 15 years. Sitting midway between the interior mountains of Andalucia, and the Atlantic at Cadiz, Jerez is a city long-located on a cultural fault line. Moorish for a number of centuries, Jerez has also been home to large communities of Gypsies and Jews, as well as Flemish immigrants from Spanish Holland. And it is not only the powerful dance/music tradition of flamenco that the city is famous for – Jerez is also known for the precise drilling of its Andalucian horses, and as the home of Sherry. Enjoy it during your holiday in Spain in Andalucia.
This year’s International Flamenco Festival is being held at a number of venues, across the city and its environs, from the 25th of February to the 12th of March 2011. The Teatro Villamarta lays down the gauntlet first, with a fierce performance from Antonio el Pipa, on the opening night of the Festival. He will be performing ‘Danzacalí danzar de los gitanos’, the dance of the gypsies, and is sure to have a loyal following, as a local boy from the Santiago district of Jerez.
The intense grace and drama of Isabel Bayón, is certain to be another highlight, on Friday, the 4th of March 2011, at the Teatro Villamarta. A long-time favourite, who has captivated at Jerez before, Isabel Bayón has been a dancer, choreographer and performer in flamenco-theatre. At this year’s festival she will be dancing solo, to a piece entitled ‘en la horma de sus zapatos’; in the shape of their shoes.
On the final day of the Festival, the 12th of March 2011, the Teatro Villamarta will witness a multi-faceted exploration by the Ballet Flamenco Eva Yerbabuena. This ballet company, of 13 years standing, provides a fitting and rich finale, under the direction of talented dancer/producer Eva Yerbabuena. But as well as rich feasts of dance and music to taste, don’t forget that the Festival has ample opportunities for attendees to take part in workshops. After all, flamenco is a passion best shared for your holiday in Spain in Andalucia apartment.

Festivals and the Cultural Public Sphere $84.99 Festivals and the Cultural Public Sphere provides the first major social scientific study of these festivals in the wake of their explosion in popularity over the past decade. It explores the cultural significance of contemporary arts festivals from their location within the cultural public sphere, examining them as sites for contestation and democratic debate, and also identifying them as examples of a particular aesthetic cosmopolitanism. The book approaches contemporary festivals as relatively autonomous social texts that need interpretation and contextualisation. This perspective, combined with a diversified set of theoretical approaches and research methods, and guided by a common thematic rationale, places the volume squarely within some of the most debated topics in current social sciences. Furthermore, the multifaceted nature of festivals allows for unusual but useful connections to be made across several fields of social inquiry. This timely edited collection brings together contributions from key figures across the social sciences, and proves to be valuable reading for undergraduate students, postgraduates, and professionals working within the areas of contemporary social theory, cultural theory, and visual culture. |
